Leggo My Logo Michelle Reed, Graphic Designer, Majestik Creations Nearly every business has some sort of identification to its customers. Typically this is in the form of a logo, or brand identity. It allows your customers to identify your company and, sometimes, what it is you do. Everyone’s logo was created by a graphic artist whether professional or amateur. If you are just starting out your business, or wish to update the look of it, consider the following. When a logo is created, certain criteria must be considered for it to be successful. First and foremost, you should consider the shape, color and content, in that order. The average consumer spends approx. 3 seconds when glimpsing at a design or display. So you need to create an image that will capture their attention. Below are some additional factors to consider when you want to give birth to an effective logo. • The image must be bold, memorable and appropriate. • It must be instantly recognized. • The logo image must be original enough not to abuse any copyright infringement. • The logo needs to be clear and concise so consumers can grasp what it means and the “feeling” it portrays. • The logo needs to express the personality of your company. If you are in the business of excitement and celebration, you do not want a logo that is dark, dreary and dismal. • The logo must retain usability, meaning you can use the logo in any size on any medium or media type, be it print or web. • It must be readable and equally appealing in black and white as it is in color. • Your logo must be designed to stand the test of time. Some of the most successful logos appear fresh and new now as they were when they were created 50 years or more ago. The gold crown and custom scripted font of Hallmark Cards has not changed since it was created in 1949! In short, your logo must make an emotional connection with your customers and demonstrate your vision. After all, it is your “trust mark” that allows you to be recognized.
